What Are Astrological Aspects?

In astrology, aspects are the angles formed between two or more planets as measured from Earth. When planets occupy specific angular relationships to one another in a birth chart or transit chart, they are said to be "in aspect." These connections describe how different planetary energies — and by extension, different parts of your psyche or life — interact, support, or challenge each other.

Aspects are measured in degrees along the 360° zodiac wheel. Each major aspect corresponds to a specific angle, and each carries its own quality of interaction — some flowing and cooperative, others tense and driving.

The Major Aspects Explained

Conjunction (0°)

Two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac. Their energies merge and amplify one another. A conjunction is neither inherently positive nor negative — it intensifies whatever planets are involved. A Sun-Jupiter conjunction, for example, blends identity with expansion and optimism. A Sun-Saturn conjunction combines self-expression with discipline and restriction.

Sextile (60°)

Planets are 60° apart, typically in compatible elements (fire/air or earth/water). The sextile represents opportunity, ease, and cooperation — but unlike the trine, it requires some effort to activate. Think of it as a door that is open but not automatically walked through. Sextiles indicate areas where skills or qualities support each other with a little initiative.

Square (90°)

Planets are 90° apart, typically in the same modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) but incompatible elements. The square represents friction, tension, and challenge. It is often associated with internal conflict or external obstacles. However, squares are also powerful drivers of growth — they create the pressure that pushes development and achievement. Many accomplished individuals have prominent squares in their charts.

Trine (120°)

Planets are 120° apart, in the same element (fire, earth, air, or water). The trine represents harmony, natural talent, and flowing energy. Where trines exist in a chart, things tend to come more easily. However, because they require little effort, trines can sometimes indicate areas where gifts are taken for granted or underdeveloped.

Opposition (180°)

Planets are 180° apart — directly across the zodiac wheel from each other. The opposition represents tension between two opposing forces seeking balance. Unlike squares, oppositions often involve others — they frequently manifest in relationships and partnerships. The goal with oppositions is integration: finding a way to honor both planetary principles rather than swinging between extremes.

Orbs: How Precise Does the Angle Need to Be?

Aspects don't have to be exact to be meaningful. The orb is the allowable degree of deviation from exactness. Most astrologers use the following orbs for major aspects:

  • Conjunction: 8–10°
  • Opposition: 8–10°
  • Trine: 6–8°
  • Square: 6–8°
  • Sextile: 4–6°

The closer an aspect is to exact, the stronger and more prominent its influence in the chart.

Minor Aspects Worth Knowing

Beyond the five major aspects, several minor aspects add nuance to chart interpretation:

  • Quincunx / Inconjunct (150°): Uncomfortable adjustment between incompatible energies. Often associated with health or lifestyle recalibration.
  • Semi-sextile (30°): Mild, slightly awkward interaction requiring conscious effort.
  • Quintile (72°): Associated with unique talents and creative gifts.

Aspect Patterns: When Three or More Planets Connect

When multiple planets form aspects with each other, they create recognizable geometric patterns with layered meanings:

  • Grand Trine: Three planets in trine — a closed loop of flowing energy, often indicating exceptional natural ability in a particular element.
  • T-Square: Two planets in opposition with a third planet squaring both — intense drive and challenge pointing toward one focal planet.
  • Grand Cross: Four planets in two opposing pairs, all squaring each other — formidable tension demanding constant balancing.
  • Yod ("Finger of God"): Two planets in sextile, both quincunx a third — a fated, specialized energy requiring unique expression.
